The 5 Voices

What is it like to be on the other side of you?  The 5 Voices is a system which was built to help you answer this question as well as to help you gain a better understanding of the dynamics of your team.  The 5 Voices framework helps leaders comprehend the various voices that are present at the tableland helps teams work together more effectively. We take a deep dive into each of the voices in our Transforming Team Communication workshops, but here is a brief introduction.

  1. Pioneers: Pioneers are forward-thinking individuals who are constantly aiming for breakthroughs. They are driven, opinionated, and often present their ideas with a “back me or fight me” attitude. They push for progress and change.
  2. Connectors: Connectors possess the ability to link people to ideas. They are natural relationship builders with a wide network and the power to rally others around their passions. Connectors excel at getting others to buy into their vision.
  3. Guardians: Guardians are focused on preserving what has already been established. They meticulously ask detailed questions and provide critical analysis to ensure the team doesn’t veer off track or waste resources. They bring stability and prevent unnecessary risks.
  4. Creatives: Creatives have a unique ability to see possibilities for the future long before they become reality. While they may be quieter voices, they offer valuable insight into potential opportunities, threats, and ways to align with an organization’s values.
  5. Nurturers: Nurturers are compassionate and caring individuals who foster strong relationships within an organization. They selflessly support others, prioritize harmony, and are always attentive to the needs of those around them. Nurturers are natural team players who prioritize the well-being of the group.

Each individual has one foundational voice through which the engage the world.  However, each individual’s foundational voice is filtered through a range of the other voices which affects the expression of one’s foundational voice depending on how those voices are ordered in their wiring.

The visualization of the Five Voices illustrates the varying volumes of each voice, with Pioneers being the loudest and potentially overpowering the input of others. Immature Pioneers may dominate the conversation and limit the contributions of quieter voices, such as Nurturers, Creatives, or Guardians.

Awareness and understanding are key to leveraging the strengths of each voice. Connectors must learn to listen to others and not solely focus on selling their own ideas. Guardians often need affirmation and encouragement to bring forth their critical analysis. Creatives thrive in environments where they feel heard and respected, while Nurturers appreciate being truly listened to without immediate critique or judgment.

To facilitate productive discussions, we recommend inviting contributions in reverse order, starting with the Nurturer’s opinion, then hearing from Creatives, allowing Guardians to ask their questions, and finally letting Connectors and Pioneers contribute. Harnessing and amplifying all five voices leads to increased productivity and richer team dynamics.
